Ortovox Free Rider 24W ABS Avalanche Airbag specially designed for women, better ergonomic shoulder straps, the most exciting and versatile avalanche air bag to come to the market since ABS started in 1985 a bold statement we hear you say? Ortovox have been making advances in avalanche safety for over 33 years and with the Ortovox designed ABS bag they have in our opinion come up with something quite extraordinary.
The best selling Ortovox Freerider backpacks with their built in spine protection have been a favourite of ours for quite a few years, they have coupled this with the ABS twin air bag system, however it would have been easy just to use the same old technology, but Ortovox have spent many years refining the design and have come up with probably the most versatile, reliable and sensible solution on the market today.
So what makes the new FreeRider ABS so special?
Ortovox make probably the worlds best Freerider pack, with built in spine protection, the new Ortovox ABS bags have the usual full TUV approved protection (300g), however this is now removable and can even be worn separately under your jacket, the straps for this are included in the price!
The ABS part of the Ortovox packs is a MASS system (Modular Airbag Safety System) in other words they are removable so you can use your backpack normally when on piste. The design of the MASS system is pretty thin and does not take up as much room as other ABS packs therefore the Ortovox ABS packs are a snug fit, after a little use you would not know you are wearing an airbag. Weight without the MASS is only 1850g weight with the MASS is 3150g.
ABS bags inflation! Sounds like an obvious setup, however the new Ortovox bags have a special air intake designed into the bag, so that they inflate very quickly, the venturi effect on airbags needs air, and the ability to drag it from outside the bag with less resistance makes a lot sense to us! Reports from Ortovox say they inflate 1 second quicker than other bags, and we all know that 1 sec in a real situation can make a big difference.
Construction is to Ortovox's standard so these bags are super tough and durable and have all the right compartments in the right place, goggle case, helmet net, safety compartment plus the inside of the bags are a light colour so you can see things easily.
Ski carry has always been a great feature on the Ortovox Freeriders and unlike other airbags this as not been overlooked, they feature locking aluminium clasps and super tough Hypalon, this means you can ski carry diagonally or crossed, or vertical, plus snowboards have not been forgotten.
ABS release handle, in our opinion this is a great addition over the normal ABS velcro setup, the metal clasp clips into place and ensures that it is safe when you need, but when you have it in the activation position its open and easy to get too.
Plus the activation unit can be channelled down either shoulder strap for left or right hand operation and adjusted for height and angle.
Waist hip belt, is super wide for comfort and elasticated to ensure the perfect fit, the new buckle system is also super easy to use, and ensures that its fixed properly with a locking system for the highest degree of safety.
Size there are three options, a 24 Freerider ABS and a 26 Freerider ABS the 24 is suitable for people 155to 175cm and back length of 38 to 44cm and the 26 is suitable for 170cm and above Ortovox say max 195cm, however as with there other packs they should be suitable right up to 2m!
And the third option is a 24 Free Rider ABS for women, this is a first for any ABS style bag, the difference is that the shoulder straps are a more ergonomic design for ladies, we are sure we don't need to go into more details!
ABS have two options either the standard steel cylinder or the light weight Carbon, on the purchase options please select from the 3 options, please note other cylinders from other brands do not fit the ABS bags.

Please see our section on this here and what to do, it is much easier than it used to be. Internet talk about it being difficult is out of date or talking about the position in the USA and Canada which is a different position to Europe and the rest of the world.
